Joey, a 2 1/2 year-old toddler was referred to our child/family therapist by one of our pediatricians when he became aggressive and showed self-injurious behaviors. Joey and his mother participate in joint therapy at the Health Center where the mother is learning new parenting skills, modeled by the therapist. Joey has shown improvement and his mother reports no further incidents. Sofia, a 20 year-old and uninsured woman is healthy and not paralyzed today thanks to a physician at the Health Center whose thorough assessment of her pain occasioned further diagnostic testing, which revealed a tumor pressing on her spine. Health Center staff arranged for her to have immediate neurosurgery at the University of Virginia. She has returned to work and has had no consequences from her condition. Mrs. Charles is a 60 year-old woman who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She has a lot of difficulty breathing and needs to use three different inhalers to help keep her airway open. When she came to the Health Center she was without medications and could not afford to buy the inhalers. Her breathing was so labored that even walking was a challenge. Through ANHSI’s medication program she is now able to access needed medications. |
