Physician, Obstetrics and Gynecology   

Department Head: Medical Director          
Direct Supervisor: Medical Director

Overall ResponsibilitiesThe Ob/Gyn Physician delivers quality medical services within a community-based setting that promotes women’s and infant’s health.  Activities involve direct patient care both at the Health Center and in the Hospital, patient education, management of services, staff guidance and training, and program direction and support.

Patient Care-Perinatal Duties:

  1. Manage the Prenatal Health Team. Review and approve protocols for perinatal care. 
  2.  Staff clinical sessions at the Health Center to provide prenatal care, assess and treat or refer emergencies and manage post-partum visits.
  3. Provide case consultation and supervision to mid-level providers.
  4. Refer patients with high risk pregnancies to maternal-fetal medicine and follow as indicated.
  5. Attend births of Health Center patients at Inova Alexandria Hospital (IAH) and provide approximately 48 hours/month of in-hospital service, sharing duties with Inova Alexandria Hospital staff OB/Gyn physician group. 

Patient Care-Women’s Health Duties:

  1. Provide health care to both well and sick women at the Arlandria Health Center guided by the objectives presented in the Health Plan and emerging needs of the community.
  2. Provide consultation to provider and clinical support staff regarding women’s health care to clarify physical findings; recommend appropriate diagnostic evaluation; assist and/or develop treatment plans; assist with subspecialty referrals and follow-up.
  3. Participate in team planning and problem solving for complex patient cases requiring interventions by social service, mental health, or other community service providers.
  4. Establish relationships with community physicians to enhance referral services for women’s health.

Teaching Duties:

  1. Support the professional development of staff in women’s health care and perinatal care by engaging in informal and formal teaching opportunities with Center staff via case review, discussion and didactic sessions. 
  2. Contribute to the development of reference materials and resources for Center staff on clinical subjects related to women’s health and obstetrics.

Management & Program Support Duties:

  1. Based upon the Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement Plan and Health Plan identify areas of clinical care which would benefit from changes to existing protocols and care delivery processes.  Present these recommendations to the Quality Assurance Team and the Medical Director.
  2. Contribute to improve patient flow and work flow to support staff productivity.
  3. Participate in data collection, reporting, and evaluation of outcomes for the women’s health and perinatal programs.
  4. Education, Training, and Experience: Successful completion of four years of medical school and internship in an AOA or AMA certified program.  Must be Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Basic knowledge of administrative functions and personnel management required.  At least three years prior experience desired, preferably working with underserved populations. Spanish language skills strongly preferred.    

Salary Range: Dependent on experience.

Required Working Hours:  28 hours at ANHSI providing clinical care; 12 hours at IAH assisting with L&D and emergency consultations.  Willing to work one evening a week and one Saturday a month. 

Travel Requirements: Local travel to meetings and conferences; occasional travel throughout Virginia for meetings with Virginia Primary Care Association and other Community Health Centers.  Work-related travel is reimbursed at the government rate..

Internal Medicine Physician

Department Head:  Medical Director
Direct Supervisor:  Medical Director

Overall Responsibilities:  The Internal Medicine Physician provides quality clinical services within a community-based setting that promotes healthy lifestyles, prevention of illness and injury and management of chronic conditions.  Activities involve direct patient care, physical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral for health and nutrition education, referral for specialty services as needed and follow-up.  Additionally the physician participates as a member of Health Center committee(s) and provides consultation and training to other clinical staff as appropriate.

Clinical Responsibilities

  1. Provides medical care and advice to patients as indicated and according to protocols; prescribes medication according to protocol and formulary. 
  2. In collaboration with other staff, conducts clinical sessions for scheduled and walk-in patients.
  3. Performs patient history and physical assessment; utilizes laboratory and diagnostic tests for differential diagnoses; performs minor surgical procedures with follow up treatment as medically indicated.
  4. Maintains patient medical record, either paper or electronic.
  5. Refers for specialty care as needed.
  6. Works closely with clinical staff to ensure a team approach to the delivery of services and a holistic approach to patient care.

Health Center Responsibilities

  1. Participates on Health Center committees such as Quality Assurance, Lab, Risk Management and Health Disparities Collaborative(s).
  2. Utilizes Health Center resources for patient management such as Patient Electronic Care System software, practice management software and other evaluation tools.
  3. Contributes to overall evaluation of Health Center operations.

Education, Training, and Experience:
Successful completion of four years of medical school and internship in an AOA or AMA certified program.  Must be Board certified (or eligible and planning to take Boards), in internal medicine.  Basic knowledge of administrative functions and personnel management required.  At least three years’ prior experience desirable, preferably working with underserved populations.  Spanish language skills preferred.

Salary Range: Dependent on experience. 
Required Working Hours: 40-hour per week with compensation for 24-hour call.  Hours vary depending upon patient schedule. Requires at least one evening/week and one Saturday/month.

Travel Requirements: Local travel to meetings and conferences; travel throughout Virginia for meetings with Virginia Primary Care Association and other Community Health Centers.  Work-related required travel is reimbursed at the government rate.

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife Community Health Center

Organization and Position: The Arlandria Health Center (AHC), managed by Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. (ANHSI) is a dynamic, mission-driven, federally qualified Community Health Center in the Arlandria area of Alexandria, Virginia. ANHSI seeks Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife for a full-time position in its Women’s Health and Prenatal Care program. Candidate will be committed to ANHSI’s objective of providing quality, comprehensive, affordable health care to all, regardless of ability to pay.

Responsibilities: Under the supervision of a Physician, manage the reproductive health care of women throughout the life cycle providing preconception, perinatal and women’s health care. Provide standard prenatal and reproductive health care and counseling to women following established protocols and procedures. Provide post-partum, family planning and routine well woman services. Participate in quality assurance and other center wide initiatives.

Qualifications/Requirements: Graduate of a Master’s level nurse midwifery program accredited by the A.C.N.M. or a Women’s Health (Ob/Gyn) Nurse Practitioner program. Current Virginia (or compact state) R.N. license. A.C.N.M. or N.P. certification. Prescriptive authority as regulated by VA law.

Experience: At least two (2) years experience as a practicing Certified Nurse Midwife or Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Fluency in Spanish essential. Working knowledge of basic ultrasound technology and use desirable. Knowledge of family planning and women’s health and skilled in physical examination, diagnosis and treatment of women throughout the life cycle.
